We report on the first measurements of single-electron source radiation momentum spread using micropulse-amplified electron beams. We measure the momentum spread in a nearly monochromatic primary beam using two independent diagnostics: (1) a magnetic spectrometer and (2) a retarding field analyzer that uses single-electron separation and time-reversal techniques. The results are compared with the Monte Carlo predictions at the fundamental design energy of an anticipated source. We observe near-complete suppression of the intrinsic emittance growth due to charge-exchange scattering. The observed monochromatic momentum spread is stable over long time intervals and due primarily to “thermal” (entropic) electrons generated via collisions with the highly ncRb-dense solenoid. We present simulation data to predict the emittance growth in non-ideal conditions due to two dominant processes: ionization energy loss and normalized beam charge.« less d2c66b5586
