Rather crudely, any model built in 1971 or later is certain to have the factory serial number on the barrel. When Sigma began to obsolete older models, they did not re-issue the older ones with the new number system. When they did start issuing the new number, people found that the earlier models when actually given a new number would then be described as "new." The least expensive Sigma lenses started to be given model numbers E-S, while the most expensive ones have model numbers of F30.

Sigma did not issue a lens serial number on the back of the barrel, so to identify the model and serial number of an example, you must refer not just to the barrel, but also to the type of mount it is in. The mounts are, not surprisingly, Model E and Model F lenses for the E-S lens line, and Model F lenses for the F30lens line.

Even then, models and serial numbers from the E-S line are not necessarily compatible with those from the F30line. For example, a 35mm Model A-F lens from 984-989 has a model number of E-S 16-35 . However, if you examine the mount on this lens, you'll find that it's a standard E mount with a three-element six component design.

An exception to the above rule occurs for lenses that were designed to mount on the Duo Lens S-6 (SD) adapter fitted on the EOS-7. In this case, you will see a serial number that begins with the letters "SD" followed by a single numeric digit that identifies the lens serial number.
