The road was now coming into view as the coach lumbered into sight, and the bandit king ran to the side and stood at the edge of the road, watching with a deadly smile. His figure was outlined by the flaring lamps against the darkness.
The coach was drawn up close to the post, and the door of the cab swung open, and a man was standing up and looking round. At the same moment a shout went up from somewhere close beneath the cliff edge, and the Courier and his mate dived head-first into the road.
The brigand fell heavily back, with a curse; and in the same instant the two men appeared, their coat tails flying, and the door of the coach slammed hastily shut behind them. With that the sloping road was empty, and the coach went tinkling on its way, leaving the Englishmen well in the lead.
The whole affair seemed a shade devoid of reality, a miracle that must soon be over, but the brigand stood still, watching the empty road intently. Then he turned his back on the dark and began to walk down the hill.
He was walking rapidly, but not so swiftly as to afford him any chance of overtaking the Englishmen, a 200 yard lead still. As a matter of fact, the two men thought nothing of their pursuer. They were both quite able to cope with the man-eating brigand, and though they knew that they might be ambushed at any moment by a band of armed men, they were not in the least afraid. For one thing, they were armed, and if it came to a fight, (a fight, but not a prolonged and particularly messy one, for the brigand would only delete his weapons and enter the fight unarmed, which would give them the opportunity of scalping the bulk of his gang). They were also quite able to defend themselves. d2c66b5586
