The album’s title, “Empowered,” also neatly captures the spirit of “Black Radio,” which was created to organize the Black community and allow its members to better connect with one another through their shared cultural obsessions and personality quirks. The release of “Black Radio” coincided with the rise of urban Black radio, and the early ’80s represented the height of the genre.
“Black Radio” is the definitive album of the era, and it’s a very special release for Stax Records on its 10th Anniversary. “Black Radio” is often credited with the rise of urban radio, and the album’s influence can be felt in every corner of the music business, from the hip-hop soundtracks that would come from it to today’s headlines. Black Radio was also a precursor to The Dreadmill Studios , which would record artists like That Stick of Yo’ Daddy’s , Marvin Humes , The Mighty Jacks ,
Black Radio has spent the past 10 years as a staple of the Black American music landscape, influencing the music we listen to today. “Empowered by Black Radio,” which was released by Stax Records in 1979, became an anthem for the then-emerging Black pride movement. It would also become an unofficial anthem for the Paula Perkins in the early ’80s, and the album is credited with bringing her to the attention of Rosie Read , who signed her to Stax in 1981.
The album features production by the Neptunes, West himself, Jimmy Douglass, DJ Premier, and others. Upon its release, the album was hailed as a masterpiece and led to a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. Now, here’s where things get interesting, and I know many of you, like myself, are in awe of the original album. There are three albums for you: 1. Black Radio, 2. The Black Radio Remixes, and 3. Black Radio Remixed.
The album includes a bonus track titled “Slow Jamz (Remix)” featuring remixes and additional contributions from Questlove, Solange, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, Talib Kweli, and more.
Black Radio was originally released in 1999, and was co-produced by Kanye West and The Neptunes. Known as the first Kanye West album, it marked a monumental debut for West. His 2007 sophomore LP Graduation showed a more mature Kanye, and Black Radio continued his musical evolution as he dropped his first single from the album “Slow Jamz.”
