Validation: In our analysis, we found one classical DEA problem that was poorly calibrated (a simple two-stage supply and demand model) and three case studies that are based on DEA-RG braces. We will report on our findings and the related calibration issues in a subsequent report. As far as we know, all three case studies are the first formal applications of DEA-based optimization to structural engineering subjects. The first two studies are reported in a forthcoming survey article. Although the third case study is not published, the result is reported in a conference paper.
We made the following assumptions. (1) We assume that the observed performance of a firm (expected output Y) and the proficiency of the managerial (real output M) and technical (Y/E) staff are inelastic variables. (2) We have used the simulated a posteriori for analytical convenience. (3) We did not account for order effects. These all are practical assumptions.
As mentioned above, we modeled the problem in a nonlinear fashion. Our model is particularly a non-linear one, i.e., DEA was considered as a linear constrained optimization problem, where the objective function (i.e., the given demand) is a linear function of the input vector. However, our model suffers from nonlinearities due to the model's latent constraint. Thus, DEA analysts and DEA practitioners should use probabilistic DEA if a nonlinear function is called for.
