The film was released on 10 January 2008, coinciding with Sankranthi festival. The film opened to a huge response at the box office, collecting â 4.5 crore on its first day. The film was also dubbed and released in Tamil as Veeran Muthu Raku and in Hindi as The Real Indian. The Hindi version was released on YouTube by Goldmines Telefilms on 15 April 2016. The film has over 37 million views as of April 2021.
The film was criticized for being a blatant copy of the Tamil film Indian (1996), directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan. The film also borrowed scenes and dialogues from other films such as Nayak (2001), Tagore (2003) and Anniyan (2005).
