A interesting thing we've done in this release is making the Bridge support actually work. In the previous 1.x versions it was possible to export and merge, but the DSP side lived in its own file, so it simply was not working. This is resolved for many of the forms in this update (the user-created ones!), while it is still not supported for the 2.0 and 2.1 releases. For this to work, you need to still export to the old file format (`DMPFX`, a custom.xml format) if you like. The classes and methods for merging now work for any file format, but the Bridge has its own concepts and parts that need to be in place. Things like dialogs, option menus, etc.
Another thing the backend can do now is run solo. So plugins do not have to be active when it runs for the first time. This is useful for development, to only have one plugin loaded at a time and have all the plugin extensions work. The previous 1.x releases would load all plugins, even if they were never used. Also from 1.x it is not possible to export to a certain plugin, but this is like what the user wants to do in this case.
Finally, the UI has been replaced entirely. The main UI now now revolved around Carla, but the new UI can also be used for external plugins. So for instance the plugin can have a simple button on top left and when the user clicks it, a modal dialog appears that shows the tools - and if the user clicks that, the various tools are shown in a tabbed dialog. This is accessible to all plugins and uses the Carla locking support (like the mixer). For all the toolkits though, it can be modified when exporting new skins that look like the old one, but is done only in a postprocessing step.
