An introduction to the mathematical concepts used in economics, business and statistics. Includes calculus, statistics, and ordinary and partial differential equations. Students are expected to have completed a first-year calculus course, including at least two years of linear algebra.
Introduction to differential equations. The course is intended to provide a solid foundation in differential equations. Although the study of differential equations has close connections with many other fields of mathematics, students are expected to retain a sense of the meaning of the equations. The course exposes the student to a few different types of differential equations, and it provides an introduction to the theory behind various methods of solving such equations.
For the Major, a student must take a year of mathematics (including pre-calculus), one year of a different major, and the appropriate upper year mathematics courses to satisfy the general education mathematics requirement. The Minor requires the study of mathematics in two of the above-mentioned areas and is intended for students who are interested in developing a broader knowledge of mathematics. Students must be nominated by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics to apply for Minor status. A faculty member in mathematics will review the application and recommend approval or denial to the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Students must enroll in courses for the minor in the Department of Mathematics during the last year of enrollment, except for those students who have previously completed upper year mathematics at Caltech. 827ec27edc
