It shares a single genre for its taking part. It takes the most basic tropes: the space in which to participate in said fantasy battle, and the equipment by which to do so. It's not a space shooter or a role-playing game. It's an RTS.
However, each time one of these games appears, there are refinements to be made to that premise. Each new iteration winds the RTS closer to its in-built penultimate nature. On a rainy day, it's a shooter. On a sunny day, it's a role-playing game. On a nippy day, it's a wargame, conducting sneaky attacks and hiding in trenches.
If we don't ever even try and get there, we'll always be a shooter when we really want to be a wargame or a role-playing game, or a shooter when we want to be a role-playing game - and it's a huge deal to me, personally, because it's like the missing genre that I always wanted - I'm a multi-genre gamer in every way, but I wanted to play a good wargame, and I never really found one that I could get into.
Fixing that would be pretty cool, but it also shows Relic up for what they are. Sure, Company of Heroes 2 is a wargame, but there's a reason the genre has been so close to dead for 20 years. Pure wargames were a bit tedious, needing hours of set-up and hundreds of new units before you'd ever see a battle, and even then, they tended to be slower and less tactical than other genres, just closer to the itsoul of the genre. d2c66b5586
