One of the most beautifully filmed movies of all time, Goodbye, Mr. Chips tells the story of a schoolmaster who is forced to leave his beloved pupils behind when war breaks out. The film has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and won Best Actor for a British performer in a foreign film (Robert Donat). The Americans nominated this picture for the same statuette, but it was Sir Robert's victory. The beautiful black-and-white scenes featuring Robert Donat's quiet charm are evocative of F.W. Murnau, and the movie's open-mindedness still takes my breath away. It's the story of a man who cares for all his students, but the gentle, caring teacher is forced by the system and the wartime atmosphere to leave his school. The movie is also the first time English actors Bing Crosby and Robert Young appeared on screen together.
The movie which launched the career of Roger Moore and yet another British sitcom, The Good Life, is the perfect answer to the question, 'What would you do if you'd lost your husband in a shipwreck?' Paul Theroux, who wrote the screenplay, says in his autobiography, 'The movie's about what happens when you lose your husband – but for the first time, I wasn't afraid of mortality. When I was writing the script, I was obsessed by the fact that Roger (Moore) would die off-screen and wouldn't I be better off if the audience lost him too?'
It's set in an English boarding school where Chips (Jimmy Perry) is a teacher devoted to a difficult pupil of whom he cares for more than the boy himself. But the system (and the boy's own self-destructive behaviour) conspires against the school's young headmaster. Rattigan wrote the screenplay with director Philip Dunne (The Dunster Horror, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, The Children's Hour). Dunne was at least as important a filmmaker as Rattigan, but in Hollywood Cukor was the status quo; Dunne was allowed to unleash his heady visual imagination. The result is a steamy, romantic film that captures the pre-war mood of England and the despair of staid, uptight characters who are so distant from the world around them that they barely recognise what's happening. Because it's a period piece, the film feels even more psychologically complex than the average Hollywood picture.
