The ON-line version of DISKEDIT is free; obviously, if you have the CD, there is no reason why you shouldn't download it. However, it's likely that on-line utility, which may be slower, will not contain all the options you'll need in local use; if you're having problems, try running a trial version of NDO to see if it's able to recover the contents of your drive.
If you do not have access to a Win 98 or Win XP Startup Disk (as described above), you can generate a hard copy of a Windows 98 disk using the command-line DOS utility, DISKREPOSITORY.EXE. DISKREPOSITORY.EXE -c P: -n 98 drops the copy to a file on P:. It will take a long time to create diskettes (it will take about 3 hours on a fast download, which starts about 2 times every day; plus 3 hours to wait for their mail to arrive); however, the following is a link to a diskette image containing a zip file with the DISKREPOSITORY utility.
You will need the diskette DOS help, DISKS.HLP (should be included in the zip file); otherwise, you can request it from http://www.acorne.org/downloads.htm or from within the zip file; alternatively, you can obtain the DOS help file online here .
If your Windows 98 is booting into Safe Mode, you can return it to previous normal mode simply by holding down the F8 key on boot and selecting the program that you want to launch (this is something you can learn by trial and error).

If you're having problems with your Norton Utilities, go to the File Manager Window on Windows 98 and click on Disk2.img. You can then open it with any program you have that allows floppy drives (e.g., MS Word, or WinZip). Inside should be a folder called "NtUtils."
