The festivities are led by Troy R. Mitchell, Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing for The Woodlands. Pre-show activities consist of an attempt to type the name of each U.S. President with over 100 release caps that are projected onto the stage during our patriotic tribute. At approximately 7 p.m. the band will kick off the event with resonating glories of patriotism with Independence Day music from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Gulf War. The Houston Symphony will play American favorites from the 1950s through the present. An emphasis will be on American songs that are older than General Sam Houston, the legendary, cigar-chomping general. This is followed by a patriotic version of the Star Spangled Banner and a handful of patriotic favorites, including "Happy Birthday to You."
Music has played an important role in our nation's history through the inauguration of our nation's first President as well. Each President since John Adams was sworn-in has acknowledged the American Era as a great era in world history. In 1790 President George Washington stated, "May it be to the world, what I believe it will be,... a permanent "Lecture on Liberty", being a guardian of the liberties of the people actually, as well as of those yet to be born.[69] This federal ethos of learning and freedom extended to the President's writings, as he wrote in 1783, "Among the vicissitudes to which the human mind is subject, there is nothing [68] that has so affected and prejudiced the character of mankind as the love of novelty. d2c66b5586
