All serial numbers are coded according to one of two international standards. You may find the code in the dash on the oil filter. If this does not work, then look on the carbURETOR cover and on the control valve. Look under the valve cover, the carburetor cover, or on the top sheet metal of the engine. If you cannot find them, check the side of the engine block. Some newer engines do not have these numbers. If this is the case, the engine number will be on the studs of the block. Look on the bottom of the engine.
Shut down the engine and remove the core support bracket. Then lift the engine hood and then remove the three bolts from the block. Use the vise grips to remove the engine. Remove the flywheel retaining ring and remove the flywheel from the engine. Remove the valve cover and remove the spark plug wires. Remove the pedal plate and remove the clutch pedal. Remove the gear shift lever and remove the transmission shifter assembly. Lift the engine.
The three transmission shifter bearings are in three holes behind the flywheel: The transmission shifter clutch mechanism is in the uppermost hole. The underside one is the rear of the transmission shifter and the middle one is the transmission shifter shifter lever.
