Ariel's father is King Triton, with whom she is very close. However, she occasionally doesn't listen to him and deliberately breaks rules when he tells her to.[13] Sebastian is a cheerful and intelligent fish who serves as Triton's right-hand man, is the best of Ariel's friends, and serves as a rescuer for Ariel when she is in trouble.[4][13] Sebastian is capable of speech, and is in charge of the royal palace. Nemo is Ariel's best friend.[4] Ariel is also quite enamored by Eric, the handsome prince of her dreams. She hopes to one day meet him in the human world, and often helps Eric and other humans in trouble who have come to the grotto.[4] She is the only one of her siblings who is not pregnant in The Little Mermaid, but when asked, says it is because she is not a woman.[4] It is later revealed that she is not a woman, but has simply given up the ability to reproduce. Sebastian is the first human she ever meets. However, the fact that most of her family is human makes her feel uncomfortable around humans. Ariel is slightly distrustful of humans, having first met Sebastian because she disliked a human boy who was bullying her best friend.[4] When the prince of the human world falls in love with her, she feels betrayed.[4] She initially tries to reject the feelings she has for him by trying to forget him and by expressing her feelings to Triton. She eventually gives in to her feelings for the prince, causing an upset to him.[4] She is also shown to be jealous of Vanessa, an older human who helps her. Ariel wants to have Eric all to herself, but also realizes that her love would cause Triton and Sebastian so much pain.[4] She remains loyal to Triton and his kingdom throughout all events in the first two films, but later becomes disobedient and rebellious in the third.[4] She begins to question her loyalty and original purpose, but finds comfort when she realizes that love is more important than being loyal.[4] In the television series, Ariel is shown to be more adventurous and determined than the mermaids shown in the first film, and to be less enamored by Eric.[4] Unlike the TV series, however, she is shown to have a maternal bond with her sisters, particularly with Adella. d2c66b5586
