On 11 August 1944, an Army Air Force plane accidentally dropped a bomb on the Cosson family home on the edge of the Eglin Range, killing four and injuring five. In June 2010, Walton County officials commemorated the loss with a plaque to mark the area as an historic site.[54]
On November 18, 2001, fertilizer suddenly erupted from the surface of the Teton Chemical Corporation site at Megamouth Lake in the Ashland Flats Township. Thousands of tons of it broke free from the ground, covering nearly 9,000 acres of the nearby Jackson County lakes, threatening the water supply in the area. Blasting operations were ordered to slow the growing flow of the toxin, exposing more than 3,000 acres for a long period, and spreading it throughout Jackson County. The clean-up was finally completed in April 2003. The area affected was a natural preserve and wildlife preserve called the "Megamouth Lakes Natural Area."[55]
On April 26, 1956, a B-50 bomber exploded 7,780 ft above the Mojave Desert. The bomber was loaded with fuel, a full internal load of explosives, and more than half a million sandbags. The shockwaves from the blast blew the plane into pieces. When they crashed, most of the plane and the sandbags fell into the Mojave desert. The debris was left in place, across a 120,000 ft area of the desert. The blown-up section of the plane, the sandbags, and the landing gear and cockpit were placed in a neat pile.[56] d2c66b5586
